Our New Year’s Resolutions!

Thank you for a terrific 2023! Important and exciting work lies ahead, which is why we share AFIE’s resolutions for 2024.

Yes, even organizations can make resolutions and the best part is, you can help us keep ours!

We know, we know, lots of people hate the very idea of New Year’s Resolutions. We’ve heard all the reasons:

“Nobody ever keeps them.”
“You don’t have to wait for some arbitrary date to do better.”
“All they do is make you feel bad about yourself.”

Well, we feel pretty good about ourselves, your support and advocacy, and the entire CB community—yet we know we can do even better. And we will! And why not use a new board majority + a new year as inspiration to determine priorities going forward?

So here they are—AFIE’s resolutions for 2024:

  1. Continue advocating for vibrant learning communities that meet the needs of ALL CB students. We’re looking at inclusive policies and curriculum, strong academics, honest and accurate history, books in every library that every child can see themselves in, media literacy education, civic learning, district-wide anti-bias, anti-bullying program, good training and support for faculty and staff, and an atmosphere of challenge and support for every kid (okay, we know that’s an ambitious list, but we are here for it!)

  2. Continue to defend public education and fight harmful rhetoric that takes aim at teachers and vulnerable students and seeks to divide the community.

  3. Help bring the community together around our shared hope for the brilliant future of our schools and our democracy, which in turn will deliver a beautiful future for every young person in our schools.

And to accomplish those overarching goals, here’s our game plan (and where you can help):

  1. Grow our coalition & subscribers. Do you know anyone who doesn’t know us who might like to hear important news about what’s happening in our school district and issues related to public education and democracy?

Send them this link and your kind words encouraging them to subscribe. It might go something like this:

2. Come to our super fun community events.

  • Are book groups your thing? We’ve got one! (1/17 @ 6:30 pm, D’town Historical Society, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison)

  • MLK day of service: Details coming shortly!

  • How about making valentines? Stay tuned!

  • Community discussions covering all the issues + perspectives?

  • Education + democracy speaker series?

  • Ice cream cones? We’ll do that again in June to celebrate another great school year.

We announce these wonderful FREE community gatherings in our newsletter. (Aren’t you glad you subscribe? Don’t you wish all your friends did?)

These events are also where we learn what you think of our work and get suggestions for how we can do better. Reading what we write is one thing and we love you for it. But meeting us in person and telling us your story will really help us—see overarching goal #2. In fact, also see overarching goal #1. How can we know what are your most important priorities if we don’t hear from you?

We are certain that our work is only beginning. We won’t stop until Central Bucks School District has reached its best and highest state, until EVERY kid in our district gets a top-quality education, based on inclusivity, respect, and equity, and aimed toward excellence.

So please help us to make 2024 the best year so far in the history of CB. Happy New Year, readers!

In 1993, Annie Proulx’s novel The Shipping News was published and won the Pulitzer Prize. It tells the story of a newly widowed man who has never known any luck or much love, who moves to Newfoundland with his aunt and two young children. There he finds a home. He writes for the local newspaper and because he’s a good listener and sensitive writer, he is awarded his own column: “The Shipping News.”
